They've Moved Out. Now What?

The answer turns on a question people find surprisingly hard: where do they actually live now, and do they still drive your car?
College without a car
A student away at school who doesn't take a vehicle often stays on the household policy — they're still a household member and they drive when home. Some carriers offer consideration for a student living far from home without a vehicle; it's worth asking by name, because it isn't always volunteered.
College with a car
They stay on the policy, but the garaging address for that vehicle may change to where it's actually kept. That's a rating change and it belongs on the policy.
Genuinely moved out, own vehicle
Once they've established their own residence with their own car, they generally need their own policy. Worth doing deliberately: have their policy start before they drive the car, and if they were a listed driver on your policy, ask your company (or its affiliates) for their quote too — it is the only place their time on your policy can count toward a loyalty credit.
If your situation is broader than this city, the Auto World Insurance Services guide to updating your address after a move within California walks through it step by step.
Moved out but drives your car
The situation people handle worst. If they regularly drive a vehicle on your policy, the carrier should know, regardless of where they sleep. Regular use is the trigger, not the address alone.
Moved out of state
Different state, different requirements. They'll generally need coverage meeting that state's rules, which may differ from California's minimums in either direction.
Don't just quietly remove them
Removing a driver who still drives the car creates exactly the undisclosed-driver problem that causes claim disputes. Tell the carrier the actual situation and let them structure it. We'll help you get it right.
Their first policy is the start of their own record
When a child does move onto their own policy, the most useful thing you can pass on is the mechanics: never let it lapse, never cancel the old one before the new one starts, and keep the payment automatic. A clean driving record from the beginning is worth more to them over a decade than any single decision made at the outset.

Can my college student stay on my policy?
Commonly yes while they remain a household member, and some carriers offer consideration for students away without a car. Ask specifically.
When do they need their own policy?
Generally once they've established their own residence with their own vehicle. Setting it up deliberately means no uninsured days in the handover.
What if they only drive when visiting?
Tell the carrier the pattern and let them advise. Occasional use is handled differently from regular use, but the carrier should know either way.
